VAAL LONDON KANE

Motion Pictures: Photography

February 9 - March 8, 2008

reception: Reception: Saturday, Feb. 9, 4 – 6p.m.

"My landscapes known as "Motion Pictures" are photographic images captured from a moving vehicle. In making this connection, I posit that life is nothing more than transformation and nothing less than movement, raising questions of irony, ritual, relevance and our place in a world of ephemera, potential and progress."

Vaal London - Kane, formally trained as a painter, has had a varied professional career utilizing her creative talents. As an artist, curator and producer, she has explored visual arts and the creative process using traditional and unconventional formats. She has worked as a creative director in advertising, in the music industry producing videos for such people as Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, Spike Lee, Madonna, Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson and Bill Murray. After ten years in New York, she moved to the Berkshires where she assisted the Curator @ MASS MoCA for several years and presently resides in North Adams, MA. During the summer of '07 while working for Joyce Bernstein at Spice in Pittsfield, she became ill and nearly died. This show, "Motion Pictures", she states, "is a symbolic representation of birth, cultivation and death expressed through photography."
