THE DECORATED POT, a group show of functional pottery by American Potters
Reception: October 16th, 4 to 6:00 pm
Conversation: with artists Sam Taylor and Hannah Niswonger
Each fall Ferrin Gallery invites a group of potters to participate in an invitational exhibit focused on studio pottery. This year's show, The Decorated Pot, will open on October 16 with a reception from 4 to 6. In addition to creating strong forms the 7 potters included in this year's show are well known for the quality and quantity of the surface decoration they use. The Decorated Pot will explore the way various potters embellish the surfaces of their pots with imagery ranging from pure surface design to complex narratives.
Ben Krupka and Sam Taylor, two local potters who have shown in the gallery will be joined by 5 potters whose work will be shown for the first time in this show. Taylor has been decorating the surfaces of his pots with fish, birds and houses, often distorting them to get them to fit or only using partial images. His pieces in this show will continue this exploration. Ben Krupka says of his work, "I see my functional pots as the foundation or canvas for drawings of objects and scenes to be the focus of contemplation as metaphors. The objects depicted in the drawings are chosen based on their simultaneous physical strength and potential fragility. They are an amalgamation of dreams, travel and daily life that explore the ideas of self, both conscious and unconscious, protection and voyeurism."
